***If you do not want to go up and down the winding way, you can stay on Caliente Creek Road by going STRAIGHT at the fork, staying on it for about 35-45 minutes, through Twin Oaks, through Perris Lorraine, past the Fire Station where Caliente Creek Road magically turns into Walker Basin Road, staying on Walker Basin Road for about another 6 miles, going STRAIGHT PAST the house at 21508 Walker Basin Road at the corner of Walker Basin Road and Walker Basin Road, continuing on Walker Basin Road until it dead ends and you have to turn right onto Johns Road, then left onto Williams Road, then right onto Dailey Road, then left onto Walser Road, then make a right turn onto Caliente Bodfish Road towards Lake Isabella. Continue on Caliente Bodfish for only 0.8 miles (on your right you will pass a red barn with a yellow panel and a green street sign which says M&D Ranch) until you reach a green street sign which says Sample Ave. At the entrance to Sample Ave, there are two fence posts with white tips. Turn RIGHT onto Sample Ave for 0.8 miles and you will see the house at 21926 Sample on your right. It is the only house on the right.
Also: At Twin Oaks, there is usually lunch at TOGS (Twin Oaks General Store) and/or coffee at the Pony Expresso visible from Caliente Creek Road.
You may wish to fill up your gas tank before you leave. There is no gas in Walker Basin and your cell phone won't work, except in front of the house at 21926 Sample. It will be helpful if you use these directions-if you use Map Quest, Yahoo or your GPS rather than these directions, you may be directed to roads which do not exist.
Go East on Highway 58, towards Mojave. (Or West on the 58 from Highway 14) You will see a sign which says Caliente. Get in the left hand lane, and take the left
hand turn (exit) towards Caliente. (As soon as you make the left, if you look to your right, you'll see a sign on the top of the hill which says Cowboy Country.) Go straight for about 5 miles (you will go over railroad tracks at Bealville, you will pass the Caliente Disposal on the left, the Caliente Post office on the right, over the second set of railroad tracks, past the Caliente School sign, past the Toll House Ranch (green)until you get to a sign which has a Y on it, denoting a fork in the road. (There is another sign next to it which says Bar and Grill and Cowboy
Memorial straight ahead) ***[SEE BELOW] This is important, because you need to go LEFT, up the hill (Road Narrows)--the road is called Caliente Bodfish. After you turn left onto Caliente Bodfish, you will go up the steep and winding hill and down the winding hill about 9.5 miles. At the bottom of the hill, you will pass a sign which says Rankin Ranch. Just a little further, there is a corner. Do not turn right. Keep going straight on Caliente Bodfish for approximately 2.4 miles, then continue right for approximately 0.3 miles ( you will go past a green sign on your right which points toward Havilah, Lake Isabella and S.H. 178), then turn LEFT onto Caliente Bodfish for only 0.8 miles (after you turn onto Caliente Bodfish, on your right you will pass a red barn with a yellow panel and a green street sign which says M&D Ranch) until you reach a green street sign which says Sample Ave. At the entrance to Sample Ave, there are two fence posts with white tips.
